2010 looks like it will go down as a good year for the California solar industry despite major obstacles that have cropped up in the path of renewable energy in the state. The first obstacle earlier this spring, Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac created a rule that pulled the plug on a popular solar financing program, Property Assessed Clean Financing (PACE).

PACE was a creative tool a homeowner could use to secure solar financing and pay it back over a long period through their property taxes. If they solar the home solar system, the loan would stay with the property. Good deal for the homeowner. Good deal for the solar community. Good deal for the local economies which kept the money in the communities. Fanny, Freddie (which means Wall Street) must have felt significantly threatened because they created a rule that said they would not guarantee any home with PACE solar financing attached. Our proposal alternatives varied based on the different panel types and size of system, but were generally in line with the homeowners solar installation specifications. [continue reading…]

Off-grid or stand alone solar kits are giving people worldwide the electricity to light-the-darkness. These off-grid or stand alone systems are not connected to the grid. They can range in size from small portable solar panels to charge a laptop or iPad, one or two solar panel kits designed to power a few LED lights, maybe a pump and DC refrigerator, to systems large enough to power an entire house. Remote places in American as well as American suburban homes are discovering the comfort of off-grid solar, solar emergency backup power and the freedom from worry. [continue reading…]

Utilities are usually the poster child for hate relationships when it comes to solar energy. However, having said that, I think these frenemies are warming up to the changes slowing coming over popular society and are jumping on the solar bandwagon, cleaner air and a sustainable future. (It did not go unnoticed that California utilities opted out of the Prop 23 fight.)

Case in point. Southern California Edison has announced plans to sell its share in of the country’s largest coal-fired power plants in New Mexico. Coal fired power plant emissions from the New Mexico plants have affected some of the areas National Park monuments as reported by environmental officials. Southern California Edison has signed contracts to receive a larger part of their electricity from solar and wind farms. [continue reading…]
